Homemade Whiskey Rocks

So my friend really loves whiskey. (No seriously, it's not me!)

Whiskey Rocks
I've seen these Whiskey Rocks for sale many times before -- expensive pieces of rock designed to keep your drink cold. They are made of soapstone, a very soft stone that is non-porous, odorless and tasteless - put them in the freezer and they will keep your drink nice and cold without diluting it like ice cubes! The problem? They are like $30 for a set! Ridiculous! Here's how I made my own...
I just happened to have a big chunk of soap stone kicking around.


Used to carve soapstone when I was younger

Make a nice slice...

Despite it being so soft... it took a long time to saw through!

Few more cuts and I have the rough shapes done.

Ta da?

They turn dark when wet -- just have to throw them in the freezer now!

  1. Very nice! I didn't know you could cut soapstone like that... Could be good material for a CNC router or other tool like that.

  2. You could -- but the dust isn't very safe to breath in. Would make for some amazing pieces though! You'd want to have lots of lube to keep the dust down. Let me know if you try it out!
